    BOARD EMERITUS

Our program is led by dedicated clergy and educators who are passionate about forming the next generation of deacons. The School for Deacons operates under the oversight of the Bishop of California, and day-to-day leadership is provided by the Archdeacon of the diocese (who also serves as the Director of the School). Currently, the Archdeacon and Director of the School for Deacons is The Venerable Miguel Bustos, who works closely with the bishop and diocesan staff to support our students.

In an exciting partnership, our School for Deacons is now part of the Deacons Formation Collaborative with Bexley Seabury Seminary. This innovative collaboration allows our students to engage in coursework provided through Bexley Seabury's distinguished faculty, renowned for their academic excellence and commitment to practical ministry. Through this partnership, you will benefit from an enriched learning environment that combines rigorous theological education with hands-on diaconal formation.

Who will teach and mentor you? Alongside Bexley Seabury's exceptional instructors, our faculty includes experienced deacons, priests, and lay leaders who bring deep practical wisdom and academic knowledge. Many of our local instructors actively serve in justice, compassion, and parish ministries—enabling them to authentically share the joys and challenges of diaconal service. Additionally, mentors and supervisors will accompany you throughout your field education, offering personalized guidance and support.

This comprehensive approach means you will experience theology and ministry formation deeply rooted in both scholarship and lived experience. From your first class to ordination and beyond, you will be part of a nurturing community of pastoral mentors, spiritual directors, and a supportive network of fellow students and ordained deacons. Our leaders are approachable, committed servant-leaders, dedicated to preparing you to faithfully serve your community and the Church.

In addition to formal faculty, you will have mentors and supervisors as part of your formation (especially during field education). This network of support is one of the strengths of our school. Pastoral mentors, spiritual directors, and the wider community of deacons in the diocese will encourage you along the way. This mix of voices means you’ll learn theology in context – connecting the head and the heart of ministry.

By the time you are ordained, you will not only have knowledge and skills, but also a circle of colleagues and friends in ministry. Our leaders are approachable – from the Archdeacons to the instructors – we all believe in servant leadership and are here to serve you as you prepare to serve others.
